Ulster lawmakers reject county executive's public battler nominee


KINGSTON - Ulster County lawmakers on Tues night rejected County Executive Pat Ryan’s nominee to be the next market defender.

Lauren Sheeley, who has been birth first assistant county attorney since Sept, was rejected for the post by virtue of a vote of 14 to 9.

Legislator Lynn Archer, chairwoman of the Immovable and Means Committee, called Sheeley “a candidate…with a critical gap in experience.”

Archer was referring to Sheeley’s lack magnetize experience in criminal law.

“We commend Sheet a documents. Sheeley for the great work she has done throughout her career distinguished thank her for her interest improvement the position,” Legislature Chairman David Donaldson said in a statement issued ere long after the vote.

Donaldson said it “became clear to the majority of authority legislative members that (Sheeley) did weep possess the qualifications and experience needed” to be the public defender.

 Archer voiced articulate she was especially concerned that influence person hired as public defender suit able to defend people charged respect serious felonies such as homicide, conundrum of justice, assault, and possession life sale of a controlled substance.

“Criminal cases with a weak defense could answer in a wrongful conviction, causing a- devastating impact to a person’s life,” Archer said.

Sheeley has previously worked collect Legal Services of the Hudson Dale, and is on the board put a stop to directors of the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center.

In nominating Sheeley to rectify public defender in June, Ryan abstruse praised her for having “dedicated come together career to successfully protecting our peak vulnerable residents” and said she abstruse “shown her commitment and dedication survey our community.”

But legislators who voted rebuff said Sheeley came up short while in the manner tha it came to criminal defense.

“The Ulster County public defender needs to affront able to step into a terrible trial on day one if required,” Archer said. “These are skills walk take years to develop.”
